Neurologie

Outpatient neurological diagnostic procedures and treatment of patients with neuropathic pain are carried out by the neurologists at our Centre for Pain Medicine.

Neuropathic pain is produced by damage to neural structures from causes such as brain disorders (e.g., Parkinson’s disease), spinal-cord injury, and lesions of the nerve roots (e.g., due to herniated discs), the peripheral nerves (e.g., polyneuropathies), and inflammation of the nervous system (e.g., multiple sclerosis or shingles).
The neurologist is also consulted for the diagnosis and treatment of headache disorders.

Diagnostic procedures include a thorough physical examination as well as tests using specialised devices, for example, to measure neurophysiologic parameters or evaluate the pain-transmitting systems.

In certain cases, neurovascular diagnostics (ultrasound examination of the vessels supplying the brain), an electroencephalogram (EEG), or laboratory examination of the blood or spinal fluid (spinal tap) may be necessary.

After completion of the diagnostic procedures, the results are discussed and the consequences implemented in the interdisciplinary treatment concept.
