Measures to avoid extraneous blood prior to and during operations
Certain operations are associated with major blood loss, and when extraneous blood must be given the risk of complications such as immune reactions, infections, or other side effects cannot always be avoided.
In some surgical procedures, measures can be taken to avoid using extraneous blood. One method is to collect the patient’s own blood during and after the operation and transfuse it after special cleansing and processing. Another possibility, in suitable cases, is to have the patient donate his or her own blood in the weeks before surgery. Both methods are available at our Institute for Anesthesiology / Centre for Pain Medicine.
